Published Work

Game On

Unlike most of my pieces which are academic in nature, this article is my first attempt at journalistic writing. It was written for the TCU Magazine while I was interning there during my final semester at TCU. I was able to spin the article in such a way that it wasn't just bare facts about someone who went to TCU and now has a job he really enjoys, but because of the tidbits and details I was able to ween from him from our few phone interviews, I was able to craft a story about destiny, desire and determination.

While it is not my typical style of writing (i.e., not scholastic), I thoroughly enjoyed this piece and am rather proud of it. The article went through two editorial stages to make it more journalistic, and because of that it is one of my more polished works. My only regret is that due to the limits of time and money, I wasn't able to personally meet with Justin Bailey and see what it was like working at Namco Bandai games.

The magazine is distributed to all TCU alumni on record with TCU and available at the TCU periodical stands around the TCU campus.

Coffee Beans and Cigarette Butts*

This vignette/flash fiction was inspired after one of many trips to a pancake house near TCU. The final line was quipped by a friend of mine to a waitress at said restaurant. The male character is an amalgamtion of many men in my life, though not all of romantic nature despite the obvious romantic overtones of the piece. Despite its inspiration from actual events, the story is not autobiographical. At the time this was written, I was also working on a project on Ernest Hemingway, so the short sentence style is a nod to him and his stories, especially "Hills Like White Elephants."

I wrote this story intending to later expand on the story and flash back scenes and turn it into a script for some kind of visual media—either a short film or graphic novel—because I do not believe the standard text format serves the flash-back narration justice.

An early draft of this piece appeared in the Fall '08 edition of TCU's literary magazine, Eleven40Seven.
